Ampac adds Flexi FoilFree HB Ultra High barrier film to portfolio

Provides moisture, oxygen and vapour barrier properties approaching those of aluminium foil

Global packaging firm Ampac has introduced Flexi FoilFree HB, an ultra high barrier film that when incorporated in a laminate can achieve moisture, oxygen and vapour barrier properties approaching those of aluminum foil laminates, but without using foil.

Applications for the pharmaceutical and healthcare markets include the diagnostics, drug delivery, biotech and medical device segments.

Flexi FoilFree HB barrier laminates is said to provide excellent product performance characteristics compared with traditional thin gauge foil materials.

Flex-crack and puncture resistance properties are significantly improved in Flexi FoilFree HB composites when used in place of foil and they also provide easier 'tear open' properties. In addition, they are a more sustainable alternative to foil based materials because they weigh less, yielding lower greenhouse gases and requiring less energy consumption in manufacturing and distribution.

Packaging produced with Flexi FoilFree HB film retains its defined appearance even after processing and handling, eliminating the 'shop-worn' appearance that is typical with foil-based packaging, the company says.

The film laminate also costs less than aluminum foil-based composites. A two- or three-ply Flexi FoilFree HB composite will provide comparable oxygen and WVTR barrier properties to more traditional three and four-ply foil based laminates, realising improved material cost.

According to Dave Bartish, Ampac’s Vice President of Marketing: 'Flexi FoilFree HB based laminates provide an excellent alternative to more costly aluminum foil composites, with the added benefits of increased puncture and flex crack resistance, as well as improved package appearance and sustainability.'
