The booth design requirements included 1.8m safe work zone, stainless steel construction, three stage filtration and on-board coiling to offset heat gain

Extract Technology, a market leader in the field of downflow booth technology, has recently completed the supply of two LS Downflow Booths for Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals as part of the company’s Renaissance project in Shanghai, China.

Shanghai Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Limited (SJJP) is an over-the-counter (OTC) manufacturing plant established in 1995. It is the first enterprise exclusively set up by Johnson & Johnson to produce OTC medicine. The facility is located in Minhang in the economic and technological development zone, 30km away from downtown Shanghai. Products manufactured by the site include Children’s Tylenol, Children’s Motrin, Adult Tylenol, Tylenol Cold and Mylanta suspension.

SJJP has authorised a project for additional liquids capacity within the consumer supply chain network to support aggressive growth in China for both the OTC and prescription (Rx) markets.

The containment criteria was 100µg/m3 and with the space and process demands within the new dispensary Extract's 5 metre wide booth was selected for this application. The booth design requirements included 1.8m safe work zone, stainless steel construction, three stage filtration and on-board coiling to offset heat gain and these were all key elements in the final supplied unit.

Downflow booths are self-contained units designed to operate with a recirculatory air principle where the airflow is forced into the supply plenum. The downward airflow from the ceiling PLF screens to the exhaust prevent any airborne particulate from entering the operator’s breathing zone, providing a safe dust- and solvent-free atmosphere.

Johnson & Johnson project managers attended Extract’s manufacturing site along with Extract’s Chinese representative, Victor Chou of Carinate to be present during the Factory Acceptance Test. Upon successful completion, customer requirements were met resulting with the supply of highly efficient dispensing systems that conform with Chinese legislation and GMP guidelines.
