Multilayer product makes CPhI Innovation Awards final six

Gerresheimer’s new multilayer plastic parenteral vials have a triple-layer structure that combines two COP layers with a middle layer of polyamide.

The inner layer secures the lowest level of drug-container interaction, while the PA layer in the middle layer is responsible for the improved barrier and break resistance. The outer layer protects the inner layers and has a glass-like transparency.

Gerresheimer’s Dr Wolfgang Dirk said in tests the firm found that this combination significantly reduced gas permeation by about 40 times less than an ordinary COP monolayer vial.

A break resistance test carried out at CPhI demonstrated improved resistance against impact or dropping. The middle layer was also found to keep its integrity even if the outer layer is cracked.

Dirk said bulk multilayer plastic vials are available, with Ready-To-Sterilise (RTS) vials available by the middle of next year. RTU vials, sterilised by gamma radiation are under development.

Gerresheimer’s multilayer plastic parenteral vial was shortlisted in the 2011 CPhI Innovation Awards.
