Thermo Fisher launches next-gen mass spectrometry solutions at summit

Published: 18-Jun-2021

The new systems and software tools support scientists working across a wide range of applications, from proteomics studies and biotherapeutics to food testing and clinical applications

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., world leader in serving science, announces the launch of its newest mass spectrometry instruments and software solutions, and a collection of industry collaborations. These new solutions are being showcased as part of Thermo Fisher’s virtual event, “Innovation Summit: Shaping the Future of LC-MS in Life Science Together”, being held June 8-10, 2021.

"The need for accelerated research has been heightened during the pandemic, and the public is expecting unprecedented progress from the scientific community," said Dan Shine, senior vice president and president, analytical instruments. "A deeper analysis of proteins is critical to understanding disease, including novel viruses. New instruments, software and workflows can power discovery, improve productivity and enable breakthroughs across everything from small molecule studies to metaproteomics and biotherapeutics discovery."

New instruments, systems & software solutions

The Thermo Scientific Orbitrap IQ-X Tribrid mass spectrometer has been designed specifically for small-molecule structural elucidation of metabolites and unknown compounds. The wide range of applications include metabolomics and lipidomics research, leachable/extractable impurities identification and forensic toxicology. The MS system provides a fit-for-purpose, new AcquireX workflow enabled by the trusted Thermo Scientific Tribrid architecture to acquire high-quality data. Performance is enhanced by a new Met-IQ workflow that leverages real-time library search with on-the-fly intelligent MS² spectral matching for decision-based triggering of MSⁿ scan events, providing higher confidence for chemical annotation.

In addition, the Thermo Scientific FAIMS Pro Duo interface builds upon the foundation of the Thermo Scientific FAIMS Pro interface to continue to support biological mass spectrometry (MS) and extend differential ion mobility to a broader range of applications including proteomics, plasma profiling, and targeted small-molecule quantitation. The new interface enhances signal-to-noise ratios and expands sample coverage, allowing users to explore complex samples with reduced matrix interference, and increase the breadth and depth of their analysis. Additionally, optimal performance across a wide range of chromatographic flow rates (100 nL/min to 1 mL/min) allows scientists to push the research boundaries in areas such as proteome coverage, quantitative analysis, and more recently, glycoproteomics, single-cell proteomics, and structural biology. By eliminating sample preparation steps and simplifying calibration, workflow efficiency is increased, meeting the needs of high-throughput laboratories.

Furthermore, with Thermo Fisher Scientific's expanded software suite, scientists can now benefit from new and improved software capabilities to enhance productivity and usability. The latest software updates enable more strength and flexibility in laboratory workflows in numerous fields, including biotherapeutic characterisation, metabolomics and forensic analysis—providing users with intelligent data acquisition and increased confidence in results.

New industry-leading collaborations

Thermo Fisher Scientific and Advanced Electrophoresis Solutions Ltd (AES), specialists in protein imaging technologies, have an agreement to combine essential protein separation techniques with mass spectrometry (MS) to advance therapeutic protein development through streamlined characterisation.

Together, the companies will promote Thermo Fisher’s expertise as a leading provider of mass spectrometry technology for biopharma and proteomics applications, and AES’ ability to provide high performing whole column imaging detection capillary electrophoresis systems for protein separation, quantification and characterisation. The companies will highlight the strengths of their technologies when coupled for protein analysis to provide laboratories with new and advanced biopharmaceutical capabilities that will enable greater insight into results generated by Imaged Capillary Isoelectric Focusing (iCIEF) protein separation. This will be of particular benefit to scientists working in the areas of biopharma, clinical, food analysis and academia.

In addition, Thermo Fisher Scientific is collaborating with the University of Sheffield to develop advanced end-to-end workflows for the characterization and monitoring of complex oligonucleotide and mRNA products. This collaboration brings together the University of Sheffield’s extensive research expertise and Thermo Fisher’s cutting-edge sample preparation, liquid chromatography (LC), high resolution accurate mass (HRAM) mass spectrometry (MS) and data interpretation software technologies to enable the development of streamlined analytical workflows and robust fit-for-purpose processes.

Thermo Fisher Scientific will showcase its newest products, software solutions and collaborations in a company-hosted virtual event, “Innovation Summit: Shaping the Future of LC-MS in Life Science Together,” from June 8-10, 2021. Register here to learn more.
