As global regulators accelerate restrictions on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a new industry whitepaper is warning that chemical manufacturers face a narrowing window to prepare for potentially far-reaching operational and commercial disruption.

Launched at Chemspec Europe 2026, the report, titled "PFAS: The Science, Regulation and Road to Substitution" and prepared by Global Product Compliance Group and S&P Global, argues that the period leading up to 2030 will represent a critical transition phase as regulators across major global markets move towards broader PFAS restrictions.

PFAS chemicals — known as "forever chemicals" due to their environmental persistence — are widely used across industries, including pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, coatings, electronics, agrochemicals and medical devices.

More than 10,000 substances are now estimated to fall within the PFAS category, with regulatory definitions continuing to expand.

The whitepaper highlights the scale of the challenge facing manufacturers, particularly in Europe, where the proposed universal PFAS restriction under REACH is expected to become one of the most extensive chemical regulatory measures introduced to date.
