ACHEMA 2024: Marchesini Group celebrates 50 years of innovation

Published: 31-May-2024

Reflecting on the past, innovating for the future

One of the most anticipated events for chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnological companies worldwide is returning: Achema 2024. This edition, scheduled from 10th to 14th June, will be a special occasion for Marchesini Group, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. In addition to showcasing a wide selection of machines and production lines for the pharmaceutical industry, the Group will invite visitors to join the celebrations and reflect on the future together, sharing new ideas and projects.

The G3 stand – Hall 3.1 will host several solutions produced by various Group divisions, including an absolute novelty designed to enhance the performance of companies specialised in the production of injectable sterile medicines. It is a line under isolator for sterile filling, capping, and coding of vials of various sizes, designed to be extremely fast: the line can produce up to 500 pieces per minute with 100% IPC. The line will be unveiled to the public on the first day of the event, 10th June, with an official presentation to the press and industry experts scheduled for 12 o’clock.

In addition to this innovation developed by the Aseptic division, the Group will also exhibit several machines produced by the Pharma Process and Pharma Laboratory divisions, perfectly compliant with the rigorous Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. The stand will also feature two monoblocks, one for packaging solid products and one for powdered products: the first consists of a blister machine, equipped with the SEA Vision Line Clearance system, and a cartoner with an integrated Track & Trace module; the second is a compact solution for powder filling with 100% weight control, developed by M.A.R, the latest brand to join the Group.

New additions from the Pharma Packaging division showcased at the stand include a line for packaging and labelling injection pens, featuring a robotic island that precisely and flexibly positions the pens inside a paper tray. This tray, internally designed by the R&D department, features a functional design that enables significant savings in paper and glue (-50% compared to traditional models on the market).

Finally, there will be a corner dedicated to the Digital area featuring the latest innovations in digital transformation and artificial intelligence, including the “Morpheus” predictive maintenance solution, augmented reality format changeover, and the latest technologies related to robotic applications.

50 years of history with a constant focus on the future

Marchesini Group closed 2023 with 591 million in revenue, marking a 15% increase compared to 2022. In 2024, the Group plans to consolidate its strategic assets, maintaining the same trend as the previous year and aiming for further growth. “To achieve these objectives and best prepare for the challenges that lie ahead, we will continue to invest in robotics, vision systems, and artificial intelligence,” comments Pietro Cassani, CEO of Marchesini Group. “Building the future together also means focusing on youth and education, continuing to travel and export ideas and innovations worldwide. In recent months, we have opened new branches in South America, Asia, and North Africa, ensuring an even more impactful presence in over 116 countries worldwide. Our 100% made in Italy production remains entirely in Italy, where we are strengthening production by initiating expansion works at some of our facilities in Tuscany, Lombardy, and Emilia-Romagna.”

50th Anniversary Projects

Guided by the “To Our Extraordinary Future” slogan, Marchesini Group has initiated several projects to lay a solid foundation for the coming years with determination and creativity.

  • ACT FOR FUTURE: A charitable project supporting initiatives by WEWORLD, SAVE THE CHILDREN, and PHORESTA, identified in collaboration with the Marchesini ACT Foundation. The Group will support these projects through various means, including donation of a percentage of the year’s sales and a €5 voucher for customers to direct towards one of the three associations. The supported projects include telemedicine aid in Peru and Bolivia by WeWorld, support for Syrian refugee camp preschools and women-led enterprises in Jordan by Save the Children, and the creation of Bologna’s biodiversity forest by Phoresta.
  • FUTURE PACK CHALLENGE: Focused on young people, the Future Pack Challenge involved 42 students from seven countries, collaborating with BOOM (CRIF’s Knowledge and Innovation Hub) in six teams to create innovative pharmaceutical packaging solutions over six months. Guided by 45 Group mentors, the students participated in 20 virtual sessions, including a welcome day in February and a September awards night for the winning team.
  • FAMILY & FRIENDS: To celebrate the anniversary, the Group opened its production facilities to employees’ friends and families, allowing them to see the workplaces and automatic machines. These Saturday morning events included production space tours and interactive activities like tinkering workshops and animated readings for children. Over a thousand people have participated since March, with six events planned throughout 2024, continuing into 2025 at the Headquarters and other Pianoro (Bologna) facilities.
  • FUTURE TEAM: To prepare for future challenges, Marchesini Group expanded its 2024 training catalog with three special courses focused on personal growth, courage, teamwork and shared values. With the help of experts, employees engage in group activities and discussions to foster synergy. Additionally, a five-episode miniseries, launched on 18 April on the Group’s Training Hub, encapsulates the values and emphasises the growth opportunities offered by diversity.
