Leading pharmaceutical packaging security systems provider, Laetus, has launched the Tracking wt solution to bolster the anticounterfeit measures employed by manufacturers.

The innovative Tracking wt is said to be the most advanced system of its kind currently available and offers pharmaceutical companies in particular a distinct advantage in protecting and securing products through the supply chain.

Based on Laetus' proven barcode reading and vision sensor technology, the modular Tracking wt works by recording and saving individual pack numbers in a database. As these are collated at each step of the packaging operation, a unique code is applied that correlates to those recorded during the previous step.

This is also logged, creating a hierarchical database that can be interrogated at any point to determine the provenance and passage through the supply chain of each packaging unit. The result is a full, FDA compliant, e-Pedigree that allows manufacturers to trace products from individual packs to pallets and beyond.

The Tracking wt is compatible with the specifications of proposed national database structures currently under discussion and provides irrefutable proof of the authenticity (or otherwise) of each packaging unit, which is stored until its expiry date. This is a valuable weapon for manufacturers in the fight against counterfeit products and when implemented right through the supply chain - manufacturer, forwarder, wholesaler, pharmacy - can combat fraud by identifying where and when anomalies occur.

In response to customer requirements, the Tracking wt incorporates an effective easy-rework management feature, which allows manufacturers to retrieve scanned-in information that has already been fed into a database, should third-party equipment such as a case packer, shrink wrapper or bundler suffer a crash during production.

By rescuing such information collected by a barcode reader, a crashed carton can be unpacked, the unique ID number destroyed and the contents re-worked back into a valid carton. This ensures that efficient workflow is maintained, while eradicating the risk of invalid boxes entering the supply chain.

Similarly, should a pack be detected as incomplete, the Tracking wt is able to identify a missing box for re-working, thanks to its automatic and manual correction capability.

'By providing overt methods to anti-counterfeiting, Laetus continues to enforce barriers that prevent the counterfeiters from plying their trade,' said Hendrik Kneusels, sales director at Laetus. 'This stance is epitomised by our Tracking wt solution, which provides another layer of protection to manufacturers by ensuring their products are electronically traceable up and down the supply chain.'

To fulfil the varied requirements of different major pharmaceutical manufacturers, Laetus has designed the Tracking wt with scalability and flexibility in mind and to be easily integrated with packaging lines and third-party printing equipment.
