Scientists create world’s smallest periodic table
Confirmed in 2012 Guinness World Records
A beam of accelerated gallium ions and clever imaging were used to put the symbol of all 118 elements of the periodic table on a strand of hair belonging to Green Chemist Professor Martyn Poliakoff.
Scientists from the University’s Nanotechnology and Nanoscience Centre said a million of copies of the table could fit on a Post-it note.
The 2012 Guinness World Records has confirmed that it is the smallest periodic table ever made.
Professor Poliakoff was delighted.
‘In my wildest nightmares, I have never imagined being in the Guinness World Records, least of all in connection with my hair,’ he said.
‘The fact that I am is a tribute to the University’s Nanotechnology Centre.’
