Aravax secures FDA Fast Track designation for peanut allergy immunotherapy PVX108

Clinical-stage biotech Aravax has announced that it has been awarded FDA Fast Track Designation for PVX108, the company's immunotherapy for the treatment of peanut allergy. 

The immunotherapy is the company's lead product and uses proprietary peptides designed to "retrain the immune system" to tolerate peanuts, while avoiding acute allergic reactions.

Aravax added that Phase II studies of PVX108 are currently ongoing at clinics in the US and Australia, with key data anticipated to be reported later in the year.

The FDA’s Fast Track programme accelerates the development and review of new drugs or biologics aimed at treating serious or life-threatening conditions, while also demonstrating potential to meet unmet medical needs.

A drug that receives Fast Track designation is eligible for several benefits, including the following: 

  • more frequent meetings with the FDA to discuss the drug's development and data collection
  • more frequent written communication with the FDA
  • eligibility for Accelerated Approval and Priority Review, provided certain criteria are met
  • Rolling Review, which allows for the submission of completed sections of the drug's New Drug Application (NDA) as they are finalised, rather than waiting for the entire application to be completed.

Dr Pascal Hickey, CEO of Aravax, said: "There remains a critical need for effective new treatments for food allergy and we believe PVX108 has the potential to offer a safer, more convenient and disease-modifying treatment for the millions affected by peanut allergy worldwide."

Receiving FDA Fast Track designation is a significant step for PVX108’s future development, as being able to communicate more frequently with the FDA often leads to early drug approval and access by patients.

Aravax's proprietary platform develops peptides designed to precisely retrain the immune system and restore the body's ability to safely tolerate food allergens, with minimal risk to patients of significant treatment-induced acute allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.

Alongside PVX108, the firm is also developing a pipeline of products to address additional food allergy indications.
