Cafosa, a division of the Wrigley/Mars group based in Barcelona, Spain, has developed a directly compressible powder gum containing a mix of ingredients, to which pharmaceutical manufacturers can add their active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

The company says the product, called Health in Gum, offers an innovative drug delivery system that provides all the advantages of chewing gum while contributing to improved patient compliance.

Health in Gum is specially manufactured for use in-house in pharmaceutical facilities and does not require specific chewing gum production equipment. It performs excellently using standard tabletting equipment, the company says.

Health in Gum works at room temperature, which allows the use of thermo-sensitive APIs. It is also suitable for water-sensitive APIs.

It is produced according to cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) principles for pharmaceutical excipients.
