Call for EU harmonisation over child pain medicines
An EMEA workshop has concluded that there should be more harmonisation of EU regulations regarding the formulation and posology for medicines treating child pain. A resulting communique said: 'This should ensure proper access of children of all ages to existing pain treatments.'
It also called on regulators to issue guidance documents for developing these drugs, with the aim of helping to create a standardised methodology for measuring pain in children. And it urged patients' organisations to encourage parents to admit their children into clinical trials. The pharma industry should create formulations 'where medical needs are clearly unmet,' it added.
