Vapourtec creates 'mini review' showcasing key publications

A recent ‘mini review’ created by Vapourtec demonstrates the scope and potential of flow biocatalysis as well as showcasing several significant publications.

Flow biocatalysis presents a genuine opportunity for sustainability, efficiency, and productivity. Seen as cleaner, more environmentally friendly, and cost-effective than traditional organic chemistry, biocatalysis specializes in the use of enzymes as reagents.

Vapourtec CSO Dr. Manuel Nuño explained: “The use of enzymes for synthesis (enzymatic reactions) can provide opportunities to improve reaction efficiency and productivity, as well as address sustainability.

“In addition, precise control of a transformation is possible, enabling outstanding stereo-, regio-, and chemo-selectivity.

“Although the use of bioreactions within mainstream organic chemistry is established, translation into flow chemistry has been slower. In recent years, however, there have been significant advancements in the field. In particular, enzyme immobilisation has allowed the development of column or ‘packed-bed’ reactors.

“Our short review highlights significant advances in the field of flow biocatalysis through a range of recently published enzymatic reactions, where using flow mode often achieves higher yields, faster reaction rates, and better selectivity, as well as increased retention of enzyme activity when compared to the batch process,” added Dr. Nuño.

Vapourtec’s flow chemistry systems have been used extensively by researchers looking to exploit the use of enzymes within synthesis, with the modularity of the R-Series system providing significant advantages.
