Developments in TLC
The Camag AMD 2 is an instrument for the automatic multiple development (AMD) of Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) plates and allows the benefits of gradient elution with TLC. This means that the Camag AMD technique allows thin layer chromatography to be used for tasks that could not be performed previously by TLC.
The machine, available in the UK from Omicron, offers a threefold increase in separation power over regular HPTLC. Camag has developed it so that it can be used automatically and may operate unattended overnight.
The AMD 2 develops the chromatogram repeatedly in the same direction but each of the developments uses a longer solvent migration and each uses a solvent of lower eluting strength. Between each run the plate is dried and reconditioned and with a normal sized TLC plate up to 40 components can be completely resolved.
