The EU trade Commissioner has promised the Indian government to try to resolve the problem of Indian generic pharmaceutical exports being seized at German and Dutch ports over alleged intellectual property problems.

Speaking in New Delhi, Baroness Catherine Ashton said: "We know that we have a problem and it has to be resolved. Whether we do it by improving practice (at the customs level) or the process, has yet to be looked at."

Her comments may explain why the Indian government has not yet launched a World Trade Organisation dispute, despite formal complaints from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
