Gerresheimer starts ClikStar production for sanofi-aventis
Insulin pen offers patient convenience and pain-free administration of drugs
The German company says medical plastic drug delivery systems such as insulin pens will become increasingly important in its product portfolio because they incorporate a dosage and application function in addition to being medical packaging.
The industrialisation of the insulin pen was prepared in Wackersdorf, the Gerresheimer Plastics Division’s technology centre. The individual components are manufactured and assembled under cleanroom conditions at the company’s Pfreimd plant.
‘We are delighted about this sanofi-aventis production project because it involves a complex product that demonstrates our leadership in the medical plastic systems market to the pharma industry,’ said Uwe Röhrhoff, chief executive of Gerresheimer.
The re-usable ClikStar insulin pen received a Good Design Award in 2009, the year it was launched.
Insulin pens enable diabetes sufferers to administer their regular insulin doses in a virtually pain-free procedure. According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, there will be around 350 million diabetes sufferers worldwide by 2030.
