New EU clinical tests platform

European Union research commissioner Philippe Busquin has proposed the creation of a European Platform for Clinical Tests, whose aim would be to intensify and fast-track studies within the EU on AIDS/HIV, TB and malaria. The platform would be a 'cornerstone' of the Commission's strategy against the diseases, especially where it is considering the needs of developing countries.

The commissioner said that the body would aim to augment the effectiveness of European clinical tests regarding the three diseases, attract new funds and speed up the development process of medicines where there was a pressing need for their availability. Busquin said that the body would be incorporated in the Sixth Framework Programme for EU research.
