The Regeneron Genetics Center aims to sequence 5000 or more primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) patients, Mayo Clinic is contributing DNA samples from more than 1000 PSC patients
Curable, a non-profit research accelerator that applies engineering approaches to medicine to develop solutions for rare diseases, has announced the initiation of the International PSC Genome Project, which includes the Regeneron Genetics Center (RGC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals) and the Mayo Clinic with the goal of conducting the largest sequencing project for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) to date.
PSC is an autoimmune disease of the bile ducts that leads to liver failure. There are about 50,000 patients with PSC in the US today. No one knows what causes this disease, and there are currently no effective medical therapies.
During this project, the RGC will sequence 5000 or more PSC patients, as well as samples from healthy volunteers to help identify the genetic underpinnings of PSC. Mayo Clinic is contributing more than 3000 DNA samples from appropriately consented volunteers, including more than 1200 samples from PSC patients. Curable is establishing a coalition of non-profit institutions to participate in this project and the RGC is bringing its sequencing and analytical capabilities to the table.

All of the coalition collaborators and the RGC will be able to analyse the genetic data and publish their findings.
