Merck forms jv with Supera Farma to sell generics in Brazil

Merck & Co has set up a joint venture with Brazilian pharmaceutical company Supera Farma Laboratorios to market, distribute and sell pharmaceutical and branded generic products in Brazil.

Supera Farma Laboratorios is co-owned by Cristália Produtos Quimicos Farmaceuticos and Eurofarma Laboratorios and the new joint venture will sell products from Merck, Cristália and Eurofarma.

Merck, through a subsidiary, will own 51% of the venture while Cristália and Eurofarma will collectively own 49%. Financial terms were not revealed.

The joint venture’s portfolio will initially include around 30 products across a range of therapeutic areas and will have its own dedicated sales force. The parent companies will continue to maintain separate businesses in Brazil.

Establishment of the joint venture should be completed later in 2012.
