Will combine PPD's clinical development operations in Japan with SNBL's clinical research division
US contract research organisation Pharmaceutical Product Development (PPD) has formed a joint venture with Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories (SNBL) to provide clinical development services in Japan.
The joint venture, PPD-SNBL, is majority owned by PPD and will be one of the largest clinical development service providers in Japan.
The new company combines PPD’s clinical development operations in Japan with SNBL’s clinical research division and provides a range of services, including Phase I–IV clinical trial monitoring, project management, biostatistics, site intelligence and activation, data management, medical writing, pharmacovigilance, regulatory and FSP services.
With combined offices in Tokyo, Osaka and Kagoshima, and approximately 400 clinical development employees, the joint venture brings together PPD’s global resources and clinical trial expertise with SNBL’s nearly 20-year history of providing clinical development services in Japan.
The joint venture positions PPD at the forefront of the CRO industry in Japan
PPD and SNBL have also agreed to collaborate in a number of other areas, including through SNBL’s early stage businesses which encompasses its translational research out-licensing business, Phase I services in the US for Japanese bridging studies, specialised neuroscience studies, vaccines studies and biologic studies, plus Phase I services in Japan, Japanese bioanalysis services and site management services in Japan.
Paul Colvin, Executive Vice President of Clinical Development at PPD and Chairman and CEO of PPD-SNBL, said the joint venture provides biopharmaceutical clients with the best of both worlds for their research programmes involving Japan.
'The joint venture positions PPD at the forefront of the CRO industry in Japan and creates a compelling offering for our clients,' he said.
Ryoichi Nagata, Chairman and President of SNBL and President of PPD-SNBL, added that the joint venture reflects the corporate cultures of both companies, which share a focus on quality delivery and customer service.
