The internationally respected Finnish supramolecular chemist Professor Kari Rissanen from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, has been awarded one of the prestigious Humboldt Research Awards.
The award was granted for significant achievements during his research career. Its monetary value is €60,000.
Rissanen will also be invited to carry out research projects of his own choice in cooperation with specialist colleagues in Germany.
“It is a great honour for me to accept this award. The award is a great recognition of my research work and enables to further enhance the collaboration with German colleagues," said Professor Rissanen.
Professor Kari Rissanen is a well-renowned expert, both in structural and synthetic supramolecular chemistry and X-ray crystallography. The focus of his research is on weak intermolecular interactions in the solid-state, in solution and in gas phase.
Special attention is paid to hydrogen and halogen bonds and the coordination chemistry of transition metals. Recently, he has made major advances in the preparation of molecular halogen-bonded capsules.
Professor Rissanen was Academy Professor at the Academy of Finland in 2008–2017. In addition, he is one of the most cited researchers at the University of Jyväskylä. He has written more than 600 scientific articles.
The Humboldt Research Award is given by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany to internationally renowned scientists and scholars.
The award is granted in recognition of a researcher's entire achievements to date to academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future.
