Track and trace systems deliver high value data with supply chain security - by Simon King, director, Domino Integrated Solutions Group

In previous columns, we have discussed the vital importance of being able to track pharmaceutical products through the supply chain and how emerging technologies have facilitated this at pack, component, or even at unit dose level.

We have looked at the mechanisms for generating, applying and verifying unique product identities. We have demonstrated how the various types of data carrier - notably data matrix and RFID - have complementary roles to play at unit/item and case/pallet level respectively. And we have suggested how these roles might evolve over time.

Once these essential building blocks of any track and trace system are identified and agreed, the user can turn his or her attention to just how the wealth of data generated can be best employed.

Until now, product verification for pharmaceuticals has largely been a case of ensuring that pack and components match and carry the correct batch and expiry information. This is achieved via online systems employed during final packaging, which generate a straightforward good/bad signal for each pack.

When a unique identity is assigned to each product, the scenario and possibilities are very different.

These identities can be aggregated to bundle and subsequently to case and pallet level, generating - in the process - a complete record of exactly which products are in which bundle, pallet or case. This is then an ideal tool for tracking products right through the supply chain.

Equally, raw materials can be identified as they are brought into the operation, tracked through manufacturing and packaging and related directly to end product shipments.

Key to realising all these possibilities is a software control package that can effectively mesh with existing systems - ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning and MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems), being prime examples - and manage multiple data points in real time.

Domino's package of software, coding and integration services means it can take a holistic view of each customer's requirements.

Our software control packages manage data flows on high speed production lines, delivering highly accurate, real-time coding and verification operations. Modular in design, the systems allow flexible configuration to match the requirements of individual applications precisely.

The systems are fully compliant with 21 CFR Part 11 and with GAMP processes, and have been extensively applied in the pharmaceutical sector.

Functionality of the systems is not limited to track and trace alone: by linking product data control with line efficiency and OEE reporting tools, Domino can help customers achieve real productivity improvements as well.
