The recent announcements by the UK Prime Minister regarding the Government's support for research and science, including a greater emphasis on training and education for young scientists, are very encouraging and have been welcomed by the pharmaceutical industry. Particularly heartening was his recognition of the importance of the development of new medicines.

The UK has a proud record of pharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing excellence, and ABPI is anxious to maintain and further that record. However, this can be done only with the support of Government. Encouragingly, the Prime Minister's recent statements show an obvious commitment to helping achieve these aims.

In addition, the Chancellor of the Exchequer reinforced the Government's position with the announcement of extra money and support for science in schools and universities as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review.

The global competition for location of new investment in pharmaceutical research and manufacture is becoming increasingly intense. It is imperative that our universities and colleges continue to produce top-quality, innovative scientists to ensure that the UK can compete in these areas.

For many years, ABPI has actively supported and been involved in the promotion of science teaching and of careers in science and manufacturing – particularly in the pharmaceutical industry – and this commitment is ongoing. As part of this process, the Association looks forward to working with Government to identify ways in which the UK can maintain and, expand its pharmaceutical manufacturing base.
