President of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), Vincent Lawton, was awarded a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) for services to the pharmaceutical industry in the New Year's Honours List.
Lawton's career in the industry has spanned more than 25 years, and he has been with Merck Sharp & Dohme since 1980. He has worked for MSD in France, Canada, the US and Spain, and has been managing director of MSD UK since 1991.
In addition, Lawton has represented and led the industry in many aspects of its dialogue with Government, most notably as President of ABPI. He has represented the industry on MISG (Ministerial Industry Strategy Group, formerly known as PICTF) since 2000. He heads up industry policy on clinical trials, co-chairing the PICTF Clinical Research committee and is a member of the UK CRC. Other notable achievements have been his leadership of the industry's tough negotiations on the Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme (PPRS) in 2004 and chairing the American Pharmaceutical Group between 1999 and 2004.
Lawton said: 'I am delighted and honoured to receive this award. I see this very much as a mark of the recognition for the whole UK pharmaceutical industry and its contribution to patient health. It has been a great privilege to have had the opportunity to represent the interests of the industry over the past few years.'
