International engineering services company AMEC has been awarded a contract to provide process engi-neering services for a new £30m (€45m) National Biomanufacturing Centre (NBC) for the UK's North West Development Agency.

Due to be completed by the end of 2004, the Liverpool facility is an important part of the North West Development Agency's strategy to develop a sustainable and dynamic science base in the north west of England. The key objective of the NBC is to speed up the transfer of research to commercial exploitation through professional manufactur-ing support.

The 3,500m2 centre will employ approximately 80 people and will carry out the initial manufacture of biopharmaceuticals for early stage production. Focusing on the needs of small to medium sized enterprises the NBC will provide a range of services from process development to small-scale GMP manufacture.

AMEC will be involved from the project definition stage. Its multi-disciplinary design team, comprising biopharmaceutical specialists, process engineers, mechanical engineers and control system engineers, will design all aspects of the process development and GMP suites, specify and select equipment, detail the control and operating philosophies and provide input to the overall building layout and space management.
