Barry Stickings, chairman of BASF plc, has been appointed a Commander of the British Empire, CBE, in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to the chemicals industry.


Barry Stickings, chairman of BASF plc, has been appointed a Commander of the British Empire, CBE, in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to the chemicals industry.

After working for BP Chemicals in London, and as a school teacher in Canada, Stiockings joined BASF in 1971 in Toronto. Following assignments in Germany and Canada, he transferred to Ludwigshafen in 1985 as business director, plasticisers, and was appointed group vice president, industrial chemicals for BASF Corporation in the US in 1988.

He returned to the UK in 1993 as managing director of BASF plc and was appointed chairman in 2001. He is shortly to retire as president, region Europe, a role in which he was responsible for seven BASF business centres across Europe.

Stickings is active in the Chemical Industries As-sociation (CIA). He was deputy chairman of the Chemicals Innovation and Growth Team set up by the UK Government in 2002 and was appointed chairman of the UK Chemistry Leadership Council when it was established in 2003. He is also chairman of BioCity Nottingham, a healthcare and bioscience innovation and incubation centre founded in 2002.

'I am delighted to receive this honour personally and also very pleased that the importance of the UK chemicals industry is recognised,' Stickings said.
