BASF gets a firmer hold on tablets
BASF has presented a new binder for tablet production, Kollidon VA 64 Fine, at the Convention on Pharmaceutical Ingredients (CPhI), Madrid, Spain.

The product, a further refinement of Kollidon VA 64, employs a smaller particle size in order to increase the tensile strength of the tablet core, making it less susceptible to breakage and abrasion. The resultant increase in stability allows easier tablet handling and improved protection during transport.
Kollidon VA 64 Fine can be used for both direct compression and roller compaction, allowing manufacturers to reduce production process times for solid oral dosage forms.
In August the polymer copovidone, on which Kollidon products are based, was granted 'generally recognised as safe/self-affirmed' (GRAS/SA) status by the US FDA, allowing their use in dietary supplements and other food products intended for the US market.
