UK Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt has unveiled plans to help women scientists develop their careers after they have children, and to increase the recognition of women in the profession.
The measures include:
Developing a targeted strategy to improve women's participation across the sciences. Funding of £35,000/yr for the next three years for a Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) campaignAn £80K 3-year package to fund mentoring schemes aimed at helping women scientists and engineers return to work after a career break. The scheme is supported by companies including AstraZenecaAn annual competition run by the Royal Society to raise the profile of women in science. The Franklin Medal, which recognises the contribution Rosalind Franklin made to the discovery of DNA, is worth £30,000 and will be awarded to a researcher for scientific innovation to be used for equipment, study tours or a sabbatical for further research or publications.
