Bormioli Pharma is set to showcase its sustainable packaging range EcoPositive at Pharmapack.
With over 15 years of research into more responsible packaging solutions for the pharma industry, Bormioli Pharma has introduced to the market – as industrial products – 3 ranges of low-impact packaging solutions, consistently with 3 different sustainability approaches:
- Regenerate: glass and plastic packaging recycled from first-choice waste collection
- Renew: bioplastic packaging derived from renewable sources
- Reloop: glass and advanced polymer products made from infinitely reusable materials
EcoPositive includes more responsible plastic packaging solutions in rPET, rHDPE, Green PE, PP, Carbon Capture PET, all of these being showcased at the fair. These are just some of the Bormioli Pharma’s wider and different solutions proposed to the market.
During the event, it is possible to understand the process by which, from polymers, the product is created. For instance, rPET and rHDPE are recycled polymers that come from a post-consumer collection, while Green PE and PP are bioplastics made from sugar cane from which Bormioli Pharma creates pill bottles.
Being fully aware that these solutions must – in the first place – guarantee end users’ safety and therapy efficiency, Bormioli Pharma undertook a data-based path.
A Bormioli spokesperson said: “That’s why EcoPositive glass and plastic solutions can be provided together with detailed LCA studies, as well as with extractables testing showing the safety in any conditions of these solutions in respect to conventional ones.
“With regards to rPET, for example, sustainable plastic packaging solutions have registered values – in terms of extractables presence - 150 times below the risk index in the worst case scenario, while the LCA analysis showed a 37,2% reduction when it comes to the impact on the environment, thanks to more environmentally-friendly raw materials production and processing.”

The introduction of EcoPositive reflects the company’s pledge towards sustainability: the company has set the goal to use the 50% of sustainable raw materials in production by 2025, a goal to which the company is closer year after year – in 2021, this share amounted to 32% compared to 16% in 2020.
This topic will be emphasised by Roberto Valenti, Head of Materials Development in the company, during a learning lab held at Pharmapack Europe on 2 February at 12.10pm. Valenti will also explain the new frontiers of sustainable packaging, such as chemical rPET, closed-loop LHDPE and the use of barrier materials to reduce the weight of bottles.
