Camera aids compliance

A low-cost, plug-and-play vision sensor designed to detect and inspect variable data on packaging, including lot codes and batch codes, has been developed by Erwin Sick, of St Albans in the UK. Based on pixel counting, the DCI 10 Camera Sensor detects the presence and checks the quality of printed codes.

The system integrates optics and light source into a single piece of equipment, making it easy to install onto a production line. Set-up is via a keypad and display that shows an image of the code. This enables the operator to see if reflections or poor quality background could interfere with the operation of the sensor. The detection area measures 20 x 20mm and maximum line speed is 50 products/second.
