Chinese police have broken four criminal networks producing fake Viagra, Tamiflu and anti-malaria drugs sold domestically in China and exported to Southeast Asia, the US and the EU, according to a statement from China's Ministry of Public Security in Shenzhen.
Police in five cities and provinces arrested 19 suspects, closed six factories and seized 40 tons of materials used to fake the flu treatment Tamiflu, it said.
The announcement comes amid efforts by Beijing to show it is serious about cracking down on fake and dangerous drugs and food, following international bans or recalls on Chinese products which tarnished the "Made in China" label. It also comes just weeks after China executed the former head of its food and drug watchdog for approving untested medicine for cash.
