Continuous chromatography

Published: 1-Nov-2003

A continuous chromatography purification system has been brought to mass production by PRIOR Separation Technology, of Austria. The company is now launching worldwide what it claims is the first mass-produced equipment enabling fully continuous, preparative liquid chromatography: the P-CAC (Preparative Continuous Annular Chromatography). The technology opens up a wide range of innovative possibilities for the processing of liquid mixtures, especially where three or more substances are to be simultaneously separated. The units can be used for diverse applications ranging from the separation of plasmids, proteins, synthetic or natural molecules, right through to purification of metal compounds. One of the greatest strengths of this process is the trouble-free scale up compared to conventional chromatography processes. The modular unit is manufactured in Switzerland and can be easily adapted to different operational requirements. Autoclavable columns are also available. According to PRIOR Separation, the cost of a fully continuous Lab-PCAC system is in the same range as that of conventional batch systems.
