Flow switches from UK company Krohne are being used to check flow rates of cooling water feeding through condensers at AstraZeneca's Macclesfield manufacturing facility.

The switches are from the Krohne DW18 series and unlike variable area (VA) flowmeters, can be mounted in the horizontal as well as the vertical axis, making them easy to install in existing systems. High/low switches can also be fitted should alarms or trips be needed to warn of potential flow problems.

'The key to maximum condenser efficiency is the flow rate of the cooling water,' said Kevin Whitehead, control and electrical engineer at AstraZeneca. 'The Krohne switches enable us to balance precisely the flow of water throughout the system and keep an eye on potential problems.

AstraZeneca has also installed DW18 series switches in its heating, cooling and chilling systems at Macclesfield to measure the flow of chilled water mixed with glycol. The switches are available in stainless steel or bronze and come in a number of special versions, including a high temperature model.
