Grants worth €1.35m have been awarded by the Dutch government to fund two new research centres carrying out multidisciplinary studies into the prevention, management and treatment of infectious diseases in the Netherlands and developing countries.
The centres will be virtual institutions, recruiting researchers from around the country. One will be a Netherlands influenza vaccine research centre (NIVAREC), whose aim is to produce new flu vaccines; the second will be a 'poverty relationship infection oriented research centre' (PRIOR), seeking to control developing country diseases, especially HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
Both centres will especially enhance co-operation between experts in cell biology, immunology, epidemiology and social scientific research. The grants are initiatives developed by the Netherlands organisation for scientific research (NWO) and the Dutch organisation for health research and development (ZonMw).
