Eight new contracts for Exel in healthcare sector

Exel, a global leader in supply chain management, has won eight new healthcare contracts in Italy in the 12 months since its acquisition of Pharma Logistics. The new contracts, which include business with Becton Dickinson, ZLB - Behring, Hollister and DePuy (J&J) in the medical device sector, and Lundbeck and AstraZeneca in the pharmaceutical sector, have strengthened Exel's operations in Italy and confirmed Exel's growth strategy in this key European market.

With eight facilities and 350 employees, Exel has developed broader capabilities in Pharma Logistics' existing markets since the acquisition. The new business sees the company providing integrated warehousing and distribution, chilled distribution, quarantine storage and value-added services, such as sales order processing, customer service, relabelling and invoicing.

Through Pharma Logistics, Exel has established a strategic partnership with Becton Dickinson to manage the company's logistics operations across Italy through Pharma Channel, an innovative solution providing e-business solutions and services dedicated to pharmacies. Pharma Channel acts as an intermediary between pharmacies and pharmaceutical manufacturers, and services include customer service, call centres, order management, invoicing, credit management and information management.

Anthony Mitchell, senior vice president for development at Exel's Healthcare business, commented: 'The acquisition of Pharma Logistics delivers local capability to our customers in the important Italian marketplace and enhances our pan-European offering. These new contracts, won since the acquisition of Pharma Logistics, demonstrate the importance to those customers seeking a regional solution for their logistics needs.'

Exel has also strengthened relationships with existing customers. Since the acquisition, the company has extended its relationship with AstraZeneca, providing warehousing and distribution of the Rosuvastatina brand across Italy. The company has also built upon an existing relationship with the Wyeth Group, becoming the logistics partner to Wyeth subsidiaries Fort Dodge and Wyeth Consumer Healthcare SpA.
