ElixSure turns children's cold medicine upside down

Giving liquid medicines to young children can be an imprecise and messy process if the child resists and the product is spilled. US company Taro Pharmaceuticals has introduced a range of spill-resistant, single-symptom children's medications for fever, pain, cough and congestion. ElixSure uses Taro's NonSpil delivery system, which enables the the pediatric formulations to pour like a liquid but resist spilling.

The nature of the high shear, pressure-sensitive semi-liquid formulation allows for ease of pouring, levelling on the spoon and spill resistance. The ElixSure products are formulated as solutions as opposed to suspensions and therefore do not require shaking prior to use.

The product can be squeezed from the bottle onto a calibrated dosing spoon included with each pack. While ElixSure can be administered via a standard teaspoon, the flat-bottomed dosing spoon is designed to fit comfortably into a child's mouth. The pressure of a child's tongue and mouth on the spoon helps the medicine to liquefy for easy swallowing. The spoon can also be conveniently set on a table and handled by a child, which can encourage participation in taking medicine at an earlier age.

Taro is developing additional products using the NonSpil delivery system.
