The European Commission has proposed reforms to an existing rapid alert system, warning European Union law enforcement bodies about the presence of a new narcotic drug, enabling them to take action such as controlling pharmaceutical and chemical precursors.

Brussels wants to update the EU's Joint Action on New Synthetic Drugs of 1997. Importantly, it wants to widen its scope beyond an existing limited range of certain synthetic drugs to all synthetic and natural narcotics, including drugs that could be defined as medicinal. The Commission also wants to fast-track information exchanges involving reports from Europol and the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction.
