  • Maxygen, of Redwood City, California, has established a wholly owned chemicals subsidiary, Codexis, to supply customers with chirally active biological and chemical catalysts, pharmaceutical intermediates and bulk actives. According to Maxygen ceo Russell Howard, the launch of Codexis is the first step towards making the chemical business unit independent. 'With this move, Codexis is optimally placed to take advantage of the large chemicals market opportunity,' he said.

  • Synetix Chiral Technologies has entered into an exclusive relationship with Avecia in the development and immobilisation of transfer hydrogenation and cyanohydrin catalyst systems. The companies will also collaborate on the wider development of new chiral technologies. Avecia is to in-license Synetix's catalyst immobilisation technology for chiral manufacturing, and the companies will jointly develop and commercialise new catalysts for carbon-carbon bond formation, asymmetric reduction and oxidation.

  • UCB-Bioproducts is to provide commercial quantities of bivalirudin, a novel synthetic peptide-based API, for The Medicine Company's Angiomax, a thrombin-specific anticoagulant. Currently UCB-Bioproducts is supplying The Medicines Company with bivalirudin for Angiomax for use in two Phase III trials.

  • Filling and capping machinery specialist Cap Coder will be demonstrating a monobloc filling and capping machine for small containers. The machine is based on an indexing starwheel, which is tooled with filling, plugging and capping stations to suit particular applications, including installation in laminar flow cabinets, glove boxes and clean rooms.

  • Manesty is launching a new family of tablet presses incorporating 'mpower' integrated technology. These new presses are said to offer rapid product-to-product changeover, with and without turret removal, and a state of the art Windows NT control system compliant with 21 CFR Part 11 requirements for electronic records and signatures.

  • MAR Group, of Italy, is launching an in-line liquid filler-capper for plastic bottles of ophthalmic solution at speeds up to 120 containers/min. The M53 filler has a footprint of 900 x 2000mm and is designed for installation in a sterile room under laminar air flow or, following minor adjustments, under isolation technology with all key adjustment points accessible from outside the sterile area. Automatic CIP/SIP is available as an option. The UK agent for MAR Group is Sussex & Berkshire Machinery.

The technology permits separate dosing of the carrier and the active, providing substantial capital and operational savings.   • Leaflet label specialist Inprint Systems is showing two new formats of its Extended Text labels, which have been developed specifically for the pharmaceutical industry. One is for clinical trials; the other is for tablets in bulk packaging, where each host pack incorporates 'Insets', which hold up to six individually removable leaflets.
