Derek Muir, a design student from the University of Huddersfield, won the 2005 Design Innovation in Plastics competition, sponsored by Bayer MaterialScience, with his 'Stingray' toilet seat. Presented with his award at a ceremony at the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in London, UK, by Martin Sixsmith, head of Bayer MaterialScience for UK and Ireland, Muir won £1,000 and a one-week work placement with Bayer at the company's global headquarters in Leverkusen, Germany.

The seat won praise for its 'design, aesthetics and careful choice of material'. It employs integral skin polyurethane foams from Bayer MaterialScience's Baydur and Bayflex product lines to reduce noise by 40%.

The underside of the seat forms a complete seal around the rim when the lid is lowered, solving a problem for parents who may not wish to flush toilets at night for fear of waking young children. The use of Bayflex for the seat makes it comfortable, chemically resistant and easy to clean.
