US biotech company Genentech has chosen Vacaville in California as the location of its planned new large-scale mammalian cell culture manufacturing facility.
The company says that expanding in Vacaville, where it already has a 427,000ft2 manufacturing site and strong relationships with local and state governments, will give it a 'significant timing advantage' for increasing its production. In addition, it will be able to leverage the world class staff already located there.
The new facility will be configured with eight 25,000-litre fermentation tanks and, when combined with the existing 140,000-litre facility, will be the largest biotechnology manufacturing facility of its kind in the world. Construction is to begin imminently, with an estimated operational completion date in 2009 following FDA approval. When completed, the new facility will include three buildings comprising 380,000ft2 and employ 575 new staff - doubling the number of employees currently located at the Vacaville site.
