Proteomics projects increasingly involve researchers with diverse lab experiments, which means that when it comes to data exchange there are many compatibility issues that can affect interpretation and reproducibility.

To help overcome this challenge, a number of initiatives are being set up to advance a common data standard and to foster the exchange of ideas among the commercial and academic communities. It is hoped that this will lead to faster drug discovery and earlier disease detection.

GenoLogics, which develops solutions that manage and integrate enormous volumes of data, is working with the Institute for Systems Biology, HUPO - Proteomics Standards Initiative, the University of Pennsylvania's Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics, the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester, UK, and LabKey Software.

The company plans to develop a demonstration model to showcase the benefits of proteomics data standards, using its lab and scientific data management system ProteusLIMS as a key component.
