GMO-free vegetable peptones for pharmaceutical processes

Published: 1-Mar-2003

A range of vegetable-based peptones and culture media that has been certified free from genetically modified (GM) material has been launched by UK company Oxoid. The Oxoid Veggietone peptones are said to offer a highly nutritious alternative to conventional culture media products and are suitable for use in fermentations and other pharmaceutical processes where GM or animal-based products are to be avoided.

The range of Veggietone peptones includes Soya Peptone (made from soya flour), Vegetable Peptone No 1 and Vegetable Peptone Broth (made from pea flour). All Veggietones are quality control tested to meet US, UK, European and Japanese Pharmacopoeia performance standards, as well as those of the NCCLS – the voluntary consensus standards-developing organisation. They are formulated to provide a good nutritional base, Oxoid says, allowing luxuriant growth of even fastidious organisms, and to produce a clear, straw-coloured broth with good filtration rates on both cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate filters.
