Hard to swallow

So Christmas is over for another year, which gives you 11 months to think up some new and original ideas for presents for your nearest and dearest. To get you started, here are a couple of suggestions from the US for gifts for the man (or woman) who has everything.

Why not create a festive atmosphere by presenting someone you love with a GasBGon flatulence filter-seat cushion. Designed to 'remove the telltale sounds and odours associated with intestinal gas outbursts', it would certainly make an unforgettable present. GasBGon cushions incorporate state-of-the-art carbon filter and acoustical foam technologies, and come in a range of designer styles. A zippered opening allows the carbon filter element to be replaced at the end of its life, which is estimated at six months.

'Considering that every person passes intestinal gas on average 14 times a day, a person would have to be deceased to not need one," says GasBGon president Jim Huza.

Alternatively, what better way to show your appreciation than by giving a health-minded gift certificate. Colorado Heart and Body Imaging (CHBI), the high-tech heart and body scanning facility, is offering diagnostic imaging gift certificates for heart, lung, total body and bone density scans plus virtual colonoscopy. Prices range from US$225 for a bone density scan to $975 for a full body scan and there is a discount for multiple certificates.

'It is a bit unusual, I'll admit,' says Dr James Ehrlich, medical director and founder of CHBI. 'But when you think about it, there's really no better way to show a loved one, friend, or valued employee how much you care. It carries a great deal of meaning and gives someone the gift of the most advanced and accurate preventive imaging in the world.'

Well, it makes a change from socks and hankies, I suppose.
