Hard to swallow: March 2006
William Shatner, the actor renowned for playing Captain James Tiberius Kirk in the original Star Trek TV series, has sold his kidney stone for $25,000 (£14,000/€21,000) to online casino GoldenPalace.com as part of a fund-raising initiative for housing charity Habitat for Humanity. The charity had already received $20,000 (£11,317/€16,800) from the cast of US TV show Boston Legal, in which Shatner stars, last year.
The 74-year-old originally planned to sell the stone on eBay, but was thwarted by the site's policy of not allowing the sale of human body parts. GoldenPalace.com then offered him $15,000 (£8,500/€12,600) but he turned it down, pointing out that his Star Trek tunics have sold for in excess of $100,000 (£56,000/€84,000). The $25,000 which was eventually coughed up bagged the casino not only the stone, but also the surgical stent and string used to permit passage of the stone.
The casino has quite a penchant for such oddities, already possessing a grilled cheese sandwich said to bear a resemblance to the Virgin Mary and a home pregnancy test stick used by Britney Spears, both of which were purchased through online auctions.
Shatner was parted from the stone, which he described as being so big 'you'd want to wear it on your finger', after being rushed to hospital from set of Boston Legal where he was experiencing chronic back pain.
