The oral administration of a moisturiser used in cosmetics can ease pain in the knee joint, according to researchers at Q. P. Corp., of Japan.

Working with an independent testing institution, the company conducted trials in which patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee were given oral doses of high-grade hyaluronic acid produced under certain conditions. After three months, knee pain was found to have decreased.

The substance has previously been used to treat joint pain through injections, but this is the first study demonstrating the efficacy of oral treatments. Q.P. plans to commercialise hyaluronic acid as a nutritional supplement.
