Indian contract manufacturer Kemwell says its new state-of-the-art tablet facility near Bangalore, capable of producing 2bn tablets a year, will be operational by mid-2006.

Thefacility has a tablet production area covering about 13600m2 on three floors with a footprint of 4200m2. It will produce various types and sizes of tablets, both coated and uncoated, for US and European markets in batch sizes ranging from 20kg to 600kg.

According to Kemwell, the plant has a tablet coating capacity of 540 million tablets per year for film and sugar coating. It also houses a pilot plant for formulation development and for supplying clinical trial materials.

Last month the Banaglore-based contract manufacturer bought Pfizer's production plant in Uppsala, Sweden, for an undisclosed sum. The purchase of that US FDA-approved manufacturing plant has enabled it to transfer some experience from Europe to India to help it expand its contract manufacturing business.
