Merck Sharp & Dohme, UK subsidiary of US firm Merck & Co, has launched its 2007 grant schemes.

The MSD Research Experience Grant 2007 is aimed at enabling undergraduates with a strong interest in chemistry, analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical science and pharmaceutical and chemical engineering to participate in scientific research during the summer vacation.

A Postgraduate Travel Grant from the company will support postgrads in travelling to, and presenting at, scientific conferences during the course of their research.

Since they were launched in 2005, eleven research experience grants have been awarded.

'We were delighted with the response to the grant schemes last year as well as the outcomes of the students and their products,' said David Storey, executive director of pharmaceutical r&d at MSD.

'We hope this year's schemes will not only support the development of our UK research skills base but also highlight the many varied career opportunities which exist within the pharmaceutical industry,' he added.
