Leading pharmaceutical companies and academics will highlight the increasing convergence of nanotechnology and life sciences in London on 11th February, when the Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN) hosts Nano4Life 2009.
Some of the latest drug delivery aspirations and challenges along with GlaxoSmithKline’s (GSK) strategic view of its adoption will be highlighted by Dr Thomas Keller of GSK, while Dr Clive Washington of AstraZeneca will discuss how nanotechnology in drug formulation is allowing less toxic and better targeted drugs to reach patients.
Nano4Life, organised in partnership with The Wellcome Trust, aims to bring together clinicians, academic scientists and industry professionals to drive forward the development of these advances.
From leading academic institutions involved in nanotechnology, Dr Rachel McKendry, of the London Centre for Nanotechnology, will reveal how nanotechnology has helped to unravel key mechanisms in antibiotic resistance and how ultra-sensitive probes have been designed to measure how well a drug binds to bacteria and its ability to target and destroy the bug.
Professor Jon Cooper from the University of Glasgow will focus on research towards producing ‘lab-on-a-pill’ technologies and new micro and nanotechnology tools in healthcare diagnostics, while Professor Molly Stevens from Imperial College will discuss the use of nanotechnology to produce smart materials for use in tissue engineering.
Other keynote speakers include Professor Ljeoma F. Uchegbu, chair in Pharmaceutical Nanoscience in the School of Pharmacy at the University of London and Stuart Hendry, ceo at Sphere Medical Ltd.
NanoKTN, one of the UK’s primary knowledge-based networks for micro and nanotechnologies, is hosting this one-day conference and exhibition with a view to advancing healthcare provision, and improving product discovery and development.
‘Nanotechnology holds the promise to provide a significant number of healthcare advances and Nano4Life is the flagship event for NanoKTN’s bionano and nanomedicine initiative,’ said Dr Mike Fisher, theme manager at the NanoKTN.
