NSF International grants 'Certificate of Verification' to Klockner's SmartCycle line

Published: 12-Oct-2016

The verification process consisted of an off-site review of documentation and onsite audits of the North American and Canadian facilities

Klöckner Pentaplast’s line of SmartCycle post-consumer recycled (PCR) content polyester films produced in North America has been granted a 'Certificate of Verification' by NSF International, an independent, third party, not-for-profit organisation.

The certificate verifies the recycled content claims of KP’s line of SmartCycle polyester films produced in North America and allows customers who use these films to be confident that the PCR content claim is true and valid. With more than 20 years of polyester production experience, Klöckner Pentaplast is a leading global producer of rigid polyester films and is the exclusive global supplier of SmartCycle packaging films.

The NSF audit was conducted in accordance with the international guidelines for making environmental claims found in NSF 427 Recycled Content, ISO 14021, environmental labels and declarations - self-declared environmental claims and 16 CFR Part 260, the US Federal Trade Commission’s Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims.

Through its own 100,000 square foot bottle recycling facility in Montréal, Klöckner Pentaplast recovers used plastic bottles to transform potential waste into a valuable new use with its SmartCycle packaging films.

By using post-consumer recycled content from beverage bottles, SmartCycle films save natural resources and energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, keep waste out of landfills and help to spur bottle collection.

SmartCycle films provide a plastic packaging option to consumer product companies and retailers while building long-term value by helping them move toward their sustainable packaging goals.

The films are engineered for thermoform, food and box packaging applications with a guaranteed PCR content range of 25–100%, as well as heat-seal (25% and 50% PCR) and RF-seal (35% PCR) formulations.

Food-grade SmartCycle films comply with all FDA regulations for direct food contact, as well as all applicable EU regulations and directives for food contact. SmartCycle films are certified to meet US domestic packaging regulations.

SmartCycle films are also California RPPC, RoHS and Toxic Packaging Clearing House (TPCH, formerly CONEG) heavy metals compliant.

'SmartCycle PCR content films were developed to help meet customers’ sustainable packaging goals,' notes Patty Enneking, Klöckner Pentaplast’s Group Director of Global Sustainability and Environmental Affairs. 'The NSF verification provides our customers with the confidence to know that our SmartCycle films contain the PCR content they require.'
