Quantum Pharmaceutical, a UK manufacturer and supplier of unlicensed medicines and specials, has officially opened its new head office in Burnopfield, County Durham. The company has also built a new aseptic compounding facility, which provides a range of aseptic preparation services.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Sir Terry Leahy, former chief executive of Tesco, said: ‘With customer service an area close to my heart, I am full of admiration at the way the Quantum business works tirelessly to respond to customer needs. The company deserves to succeed, not just in the immediate future but over the long term.’
Quantum Pharmaceutical was founded at Tyne Metropolitan College in 2004, when 26 pharmacists and support staff came together to service the specials market. Today, the business employs 320 people across five sites.

Quantum had outgrown its existing premises and has now moved into a new head office and manufacturing plant in Burnopfield. Managing director Andy Scaife said the extended facilities would allow the company to increase its product range and broaden its service offering.
‘Whatever our customers request, it is our mission to source the formulation, delivery system or product needed,’ he said.
The company claims it offers the widest selection of specials and special obtain lines in the UK, which currently stands at 24,000 products, and is continuously adding new lines.
‘We pride ourselves on being the only true ‘one-stop-shop’ in the specials industry, offering unrivalled turnaround times, which is vital for our customers and their patients. With our extended facilities, we have the opportunity to grow our range of products and services still further,’ Scaife added.
