Avecia has appointed Shelly Adams to the new role of director of North American sales - biotechnology. Alongside continuing customer responsibilities, she will lead the further development of the Avecia Biotechnology team in the US. She joined Avecia in April 2001 and was most recently US director commercial development for the company's healthcare businesses.

Dr Gabriel Haering has taken over responsibility for the commercial division of Helsinn's Chemical Operations from Dr Roger Laforce. He was previously responsible for Helsinn's European activities as well as other key functions within the marketing & sales group.

UK drug discovery company Xention Discovery has appointed of Dr Robert Pinnock as chief scientific officer. He was senior director of CNS molecular sciences at Pfizer Global Research and Development at Ann Arbor, US, where he led a portfolio of discovery and development projects in the CNS area. Previously, he was at Parke-Davis' Neuroscience Research Centre in Cambridge, UK, where he held responsibilities spanning several areas of neuroscience research. Dr Pinnock will also join Xention's board of directors with immediate effect.

Dr David Smoller has been named the vice president of r&d at Sigma-Aldrich. He brings a variety of experience to Sigma-Aldrich. Most recently he was ceo and president of ProteoPlex, a seed stage spinout focusing on functional genomics. Dr. Smoller founded ProteoPlex in 2001 and led the St. Louis-based company through its product development and final acquisition. In 1992, he founded Genome Systems, which provided the scientific community with access to genome project-related technologies. It was acquired in 1996 by the Incyte Corporation, and Dr. Smoller joined Incyte as vice president eventually becoming senior vice president.

Braby, the UK manufacturer of vessels and silos, has appointed a new sales engineer as a result of the company's sustained growth over the past year. Phil Cameron has six years' experience, specialising in the food and pharmaceutical industries. His appointment comes at a time when Braby is continuing to diversify into these industries, having recently worked with some leading blue chip pharmaceutical companies.

Global tablet compression tooling manufacturer I Holland has appointed a new managing director, Chris Prideaux. He takes over from Mike Glover who is retiring.
